Men's Tennis Picks up Two Wins over Principia, Lewis & Clark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Big Blue men's tennis team traveled to Elsah, Ill. for matches with Principia College and Lewis & Clark Community College on Saturday, March 5. Millikin picked up a pair of victories to improve to 7-3 this season. 

In the first match of the day, Millikin's doubles team of Clayton Maack and Holden Owens defeated Juan Segovia and Rafter Sprague of Principia at No. 2 by an 8-2 margin. Cory Erickson and Justin Caldwell furthered the Big Blue advantage with an 8-2 victory over Elliot Matthieson and Everett Poznick at No. 3 doubles. Principia claimed their first match of the day in the No. 1 singles match with Daniel Gomez and William Johnson defeating Theodor Wolf and Cole Phillips 5-8. 

In singles play, the Panthers evened the score with the first win when Gomez defeated Maack at No. 1 2-6, 4-6. Millikin regained the lead as Phillips defeated Johnson in 7-5, 6-0 sets at No. 4. Segovia knotted things up again at No. 2, defeating Theo Wolf in twin 3-6 sets, but a win by Owens at No. 3 over Sprague by a 6-3, 6-4 margin put the Big Blue back on top. Erickson was the victor at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-2 match victory over Matthiesen, and Reiss Naylor claimed the victory at No. 6 over Poznick in 6-0, 6-1 sets. 

With the 6-3 win over Principia, the Big Blue moved on to their second match of the day against Lewis & Clark Community College. In doubles play, Millikin swept the Trailblazers starting with an 8-1 victory at No. 2 by Maack and Owens. Erickson and Caldwell tallied their second win of the day at No. 3 with an 8-3 win, and Wolf and Phillips rounded out the doubles sweep at No. 1 with an 8-4 victory. 

On the singles side, Phillips started things off with a win at No. 4 in a 6-0, 6-1 match. Maack picked up a singles victory at No. 1 in 6-3, 6-2 sets. Wolf was the next MU player to earn a singles victory at No. 2 in a tiebreaker. After falling in the first set 4-6, Wolf rallied to take set two 6-0 then won a 10-6 tiebreaker. Owens, last week's CCIW Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week, took his second win of the day at No. 3 with 6-4, 6-3 set wins. Naylor tallied the final Millikin victory at No. 6 with 6-0, 6-2 set wins. 

Millikin men's and women's tennis will hit the road for spring break to go to the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head Island, SC, beginning Monday, March 14 for the men when they match up with the University of Lynchburg.
