Men's Tennis Begins Spring Campaign with Two Victories in Indiana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Big Blue men's tennis team traveled to Crawfordsville, Ind. on Saturday, February 11 for matches against Wabash College and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to begin their spring campaign. In the morning, Millikin downed Wabash by a 5-4 margin before sweeping Rose-Hulman in an 8-1 contest. 

In the first match of the day, the doubles team of Clayton Maack and Theodor Wolf were victorious at No. 2, downing Ethan Koeneman and Cole Shifferly in an 8-2 match. The No. 1 doubles team of Hasting Bjorkman and Martin Cardestig picked up a victory over Alonso-Sanchez and Tharakesh Ashokar of Wabash by an 8-5 margin. Wabash chipped away at the MU lead at No. 3 doubles with Cole Borden and Jett Brownlee securing a 6-8 win over Rodrigo Laux and Cole Phillips.

On the singles side, Cardestig recorded a win at No. 2 with 7-5, 6-1 set wins over Borden. After Maack fell at No. 1 in three sets, Bjorkman added a Millikin victory at No. 3 with 7-5, 6-3 wins over Shifferly. Wolf and Laux each fell in their singles matches, leaving the team scores knotted at four apiece. In the No. 5 singles match, Phillips downed Koeneman 6-2 in the first set before winning the 7-6 second set in a 9-7 tiebreaker to secure the fifth and final win for the Big Blue. 

Against Rose-Hulman, Millikin completed a doubles sweep. Cardestig and Bjorkman defeated Grant Paradowski and Andrew Leonard at No. 1 by a score of 8-4. Maack and Wolf followed suit with an 8-4 defeat of Owen Reynolds and Renato Prado. Completing the sweep in a tiebreaker was Phillips and Laux with a 7-6 (8-6) win over Rhian Seneviratne and Jonathan Stadler at No. 3.

Maack took a 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, defeating Reynolds. Cardestig was the victor at No. 2 in a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Paradowski. Bjorkman tallied twin 6-1 set victories over Seneviratne at No. 3. Wolf added a win at No. 4 with 6-4, 6-2 set wins over Prado. Phillips notched the final win at No. 5 against Leonard in matching 6-4 sets.

The Big Blue improved to 3-0 on the season with the wins and will be back in action in Grinnell, Iowa on Saturday, February 25 for matchups against Northwestern College (IA) and Grinnell College.
