Men's Tennis Edges Thunder in 5-4 CCIW Victory

Box Score The Big Blue men's tennis team traveled to Wheaton, Ill. on Thursday, April 6 to match up against the Thunder of Wheaton College. Millikin edged the Thunder in a 5-4 contest, moving to 1-0 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play.

On the doubles side, the team of Jacob Williams and Joey Geisz secured the first win for Wheaton at No. 2, defeating Millikin's Clayton Maack and Theodor Wolf by a 4-8 margin. The Big Blue took the No. 1 doubles match with the team of Hasting Bjorkman and Martin Cardestig downing Jack Booker and Cody Ching 8-6 to even the score. Millikin took a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play when the team of Cole Phillips and Rodrigo Laux downed Tim Steiner and Jack Wenzel in a 7-5 tiebreaker that earned Millikin an 8-7 win at No. 3.

On the singles side, Bjorkman was the first victor at No.1, defeating Booker in 6-0, 6-1 sets. Cardestig took care of business at No. 3, winning 6-1, 6-4 over Williams. The Thunder took the next three singles matches at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 to even the team tallies at 4-4. The senior Maack stepped up at No. 2 after falling 4-6 in the first set to Steiner, taking the second set 6-3 then set three 6-4 to clinch the 5-4 victory over Wheaton.

Millikin will be back in action on Friday, April 7 when they face a tough test in conference foe North Central in Naperville, Ill.
