Millikin Announces 2023 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

DECATUR, Ill. – Millikin University is pleased to announce the newest members to the Millikin Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2023 class will be honored during the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 1, during Millikin University's 2023 Homecoming Celebration.
 
The 2023 Induction Class includes baseball player Devin Crews '18, volleyball player Kelsy England Wasmuth '12, the 1961 football team and Bryan Marshall, Millikin's assistant athletic director.
 
Devin Crews-Baseball
Devin CrewsDevin Crews of Eureka, Ill., is being honored for his accomplishments on the field in baseball. In 2018, he had a .372 batting average with 10 doubles, 11 home runs and 30 RBI. During his time at Millikin, Crews set the record for most hits in a season with 67. He also holds the record for most stolen bases in a single game at four and has tied other Big Blue records: the most at bats with 180, most runs scored in a game with five, and most home runs in a game with three.
 
In 2018, Crews was recognized and declared Millikin's Hitter of the Year and was named to the 2018 D3Baseball All-Region Team. His other honors included being named to the CCIW Academic All-Conference all four years of his time at Millikin and named to the 2017 CCIW All-Conference First Team after he hit a .362 average with four home runs and 28 RBIs.
 
A 2018 Millikin graduate, Crews earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management with a minor in Digital Media Marketing.
 


Kelsy England Wasmuth-Volleyball
kelsy EnglandKelsy Wasmuth of Maryville, Ill., is being honored for her accomplishments in Women's Volleyball. Kelsy played volleyball for four years while at Millikin and had a very notable career as a student-athlete. During her time at the Big Blue, Wasmuth was co-captain and team MVP in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Wasmuth also was named to the CCIW All-Conference First Team in 2009, 2010, and 2011. She ranked third all-time in career digs (1,737), third all-time career kills (1,978), third all-time with kills in a match (29), and sixth all-time kills in a season {564). Wasmuth was also a member of the 2010 team that won 22 straight matches and  was named CCIW Champions with a 28-7 record.
 
Wasmuth graduated from Millikin with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2012. Since graduating, she works as a nurse practitioner at General and Laparoscopic Surgical Associates, PC, and was formally an RN at Anderson Hospital.
 




1961 Football-Team Award

The legendary 1961 Big Blue football team set an undefeated season, finishing the season 8-0 and outscoring their opponents by a combined margin of 305-79. The Big Blue defeated Illinois State University 22-16 to open the season and then won seven successive conference games to win the conference title, Millikin's first undisputed title since the 1942 football season. The team ranked fifth in the nation in small colleges. There have been only four other undefeated football teams in Millikin's history; in 1919, 1920, 1941 and 1942.
 
Coach of the 1961 team was Don Shroyer, a 1950 Millikin graduate, who later coached at Southern Illinois University and for the St. Louis Cardinals in the National Football League. Co-captains of the team were halfback Jerry Domescik '62, and tackle Ryan Jorstad '62. Domescik, who gained 799 total yards with 20 touchdowns and his 120 points scored led all NAIA players that year, was named to the All-Conference team. Also named to the All-Conference team was Jorstad, his third year so honored, and guard Bill Severino '62, both of whom appeared on both the All-Conference offensive and defensive teams. Chuck Siebel '64, end, halfback Del Rutz '62 and tackle Bob Martin '63 were also named All-Conference.
 
Bryan Marshall-Faculty/Staff Award
Bryan MarshallAfter serving as Millikin's Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information and Athletic Communication since 2008, Bryan Marshall transitioned into the role of Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations this August, where he heads up Big Blue operations, budgeting and event management as well as continuing as Millikin's NCAA Compliance Officer. Marshall also continues to serve as the primary sports information contact for football, men's and women's cross country, wrestling, women's basketball, baseball and men's and women's track and field.
 
While at Millikin, Marshall has played a key role in the Big Blue hosting the NCAA Lower Midwest Wrestling Regional, baseball regionals and NCAA softball regionals and super regional competitions. Marshall was part of the Big Blue staff that organized the NCAA DIII Women's Golf Championships and the NCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field Championships at Millikin. He also serves on the NCAA Division III Wrestling Committee.
 
Marshall is a 1985 Millikin graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications Marshall joined the Millikin staff in 2000 as Media Relations Director after spending 15 years in television broadcasting. He also served two years as an Adjunct Professor for MU before joining the university full time.
 
Marshall has been married to Millikin graduate Shannon Black Marshall (2005) since 1996. A Millikin True Blue family legacy, their son, Nathan, graduated from Millikin in 2020, and their daughter, Taylor Black Butler, and son-in-law Garrett Butler, Both Class of 2013, both earned their MU degrees in 2013.
