Men's Tennis Records Historic Finish at ITA Central Regional Championships

The Millikin men's tennis team traveled to St. Louis, Mo. over the weekend of September 20-22 for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Men's Central Regional Championship hosted by WashU.

Matthew Kordesh was entered in the singles draw, and after falling in his first matchup against Augustana's Nicolas Navarro 3-6, 4-6, he downed Illinois Wesleyan's Ian Turnbull in the consolation round 8-6. He picked up another 8-6 victory over Corin Tang from Wheaton to move to the quarterfinals where he fell to Anthony Markello of John Carroll 7-8 in a 5-7 tiebreaker.

The doubles team of Cole Phillips and Theodor Wolf also fell in the opening round 1-8 after getting matched up with the overall number one seed at the tournament, Andrei Leonov and Alexander Ekstrand of University of Chicago.

They rallied in the consolation round, defeating Dylan Lemon and Luis Angel Guerrero Lara 8-7 in a 7-5 tiebreaker. Securing a bye, they picked up two more wins, first in the round of sixteen against Derek Blackwell and Julian Bilbao of Kalamazoo in an 8-6 decision. Then, in the consolation quarterfinals they downed Finley Buelte and Teagan Crow from DePauw 8-5 to move to the final four. After a forfeit win, they fell in the consolation final to another DePauw pair in Hudson Mosher and Will Cramer to place second in the consolation bracket, the furthest a doubles team has gone at the ITA Regionals in Millikin men's tennis history.
