Millikin Wrestling Falls to #4 Wabash

          The 23rd ranked Millikin University wrestling team lost to fourth ranked Wabash College 26-20 on January 24 at the Griswold Center.
          The Big Blue battled one of the NCAA Division III's top program to the end despite missing several key wrestlers due to injury.
          The match started at 141 pound and Millikin freshman Cam Lee got the Big Blue off to a great start with a win by fall at 2:59. Fellow freshman Peter McCusker won by fall at 149 at the 6:49 mark to give Millikin an early 12-0 advantage.
          After Wabash picked up a three point with a decision at 157 pounds, Millikin's Bradan Birt won by technical fall 17-0 over Austin Johnson. Birt improved to 24-1 on the season and is ranked fifth in the most recent NWCA Individual rankings at 165 pounds. Employing a little strategy, Wabash moved its top 165 pounder Kyle Hatch up a weight class avoiding a head-to-head matchup with Birt. Hatch is ranked first in the country at 165 pounds. The team strategy worked for Wabash with Hatch scoring a technical fall win at 174 pounds.
          Millikin's Evan Patterson won a thrilling 3-1 match at 197 pounds over Levi Miller. Patterson scored the winning takedown first overtime period for the sudden victory to put Millikin up 20-11.
Wabash picked up three points with a decision win at 285 and six points at 125 pounds with a win by fall to tie the match at 20-20.
Unfortunately, Millikin was without a wrester at 133 pounds giving Wabash the 26-20 win.
