Sitting Down with Bradan Birt, the 2022 NCAA Division III National Wrestling Champion (165 pounds)

Millikin's Bradan Birt claimed the title of National Champion at the 2022 NCAA National Wrestling Championships. Sports Information Intern Brigid Duesterhaus sat down with Birt to talk about his successful season, winning a national championship, and the legacy he will leave behind upon graduation.

So, conference was really awesome from a team aspect. At least it was a lot better than last conference, or two years ago when we were at Griswold and won our first Conference Championship. I was like I don't know if I'll ever feel this good again, but this year going into Conference, we were pre-seeded pick to beat them but their team was actually ranked number one in the nation at the time for tournament rankings, so we knew it was going to be really hard to beat and we went out and smoked them. We beat the all-time conference tournament point record which was set last year. It was like "holy cow", so that one felt a lot cooler especially because we dominated North Central so it felt really good. Nationals, we prepared for it like usually, treated it like another tournament. I wish we had gotten more guys through, but we're in the toughest region in the nations. It was fun to get three guys through, but once I qualified we still had two guys, Tommy and Bryan, who still had to qualify on the backside to take third. I was really glad that they did because I didn't want to go alone to the National tournament.

I say that I'm only 1% of the wrestler that I am. The rest of it goes to countless hours by coaches and teammates and people you wouldn't think of, anybody in the athletics program, anybody that's supported me. I mean I'm, unfortunately, the only one who gets to go out there and get my hand raised, but it's a lot, a lot, of work mentally and physically by people for 5, 7, 10 years however long I've been wrestling that led up to that. It is a lot more than me just going in and practicing every day and then going and stepping on the mat.

I mean conference, I knew I was going to dominate all those guys, I wasn't really worried. It was more of a team thing for me. I was really excited about that. I like conference because for those guys that maybe can't qualify on the national tournament level, it gives them an opportunity to like really be excited and feel good about the sport. It's really awesome because it was just a whole team aspect. That's probably my favorite part about wresting at Millikin. Nationals, I also knew I was going to dominate everybody. My goal wasn't to go win it, it was to pin or tech every single one of my opponents, which is a form of bonus points in wresting. Mindset-wise I was just taking it like another tournament.

The journey of being with my teammates every single day, that's probably the best part because I personally don't hang out with a lot of people and that's a choice. I just kind of stay to myself. But every time I step in the room it's like my brothers are with me and it's like family. I kind of stay secluded but once I'm at the wresting facility, it's like I'm still secluded just with my brothers. So I'd say that's probably my favorite part.

That's what everybody says. At least credential-wise, they say that the accomplishments, the awards, and stuff are really good, I guess. My hope at least is that people remember me for me at Millikin and not just winning and all that stuff because winning only lasts so long. I hope I touched Millikin, and continue to, in a way that helps with athletics, helps with people's mentalities, helps with life. So, I hope so.

Well, if there are any recruits out there…Millikin is the place to be, it's awesome here. But I'm just thankful for everybody that's come into my life at some point in the last five years and has helped me get there because as much as they might not believe it, every single person matters to getting us to the success we're at.
