Millikin Second at CCIW Wrestling Championships

The Millikin University wrestling team finished in second place at the 2023 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Wrestling Championships hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Illinois on February 9. The Cardinals won the team title with 169 points ending Millikin's run of three straight titles. Millikin finished with 111 points.

Millikin junior Dejon Glaster was the CCIW Champion at 165 pounds. It was Glaster's second straight title after he won at 174 pounds in 2022. Glaster was one of six Millikin wrestlers to earn All-Conference honors.

Millikin had three second place finishers including senior Tommy Russell at 125 pounds, senior Jordan Carson at 141 pounds and freshman Nathan Callaway at 157 pounds. Sophomore Coby Haney (133) and senior Peter McCusker (149) finished third in their weight classes.

Glaster won his quarterfinal match 7-3 over Nathan Larson of Wheaton College. He advanced to the Championship match with a semifinal win over Jack Patting of Augustana 6-4. In the Championship match, Glaster won an exciting back-and-forth match 9-7 SV-1 over Cole Vervantes of North Central.

After an opening round bye, Russell defeated Devin Gore of Concordia-Wisconsin 3-2 to advance to the Championship match. Russell lost in the final 10-0 major decision to Julian Valtierreez of North Central.

At 141 pounds, Carson posted a quarterfinal win by fall over Shoichi Hashimoto of Lakeland. IN won his semifinal match 7-4 over Bradley Rosen of North Central. In the Championship match, Carson lost by fall to Cameron Johnson of Aurora.

Callaway was impressive in his first two matches winning both by technical fall. He defeated Chase Clark of Augustana 16-0 and Michael Smith of MSOE 21-5. In the Championship match, Callaway lost a tight match 3-1 in SV-1 to Alex Villar of North Central.
