New Region Means New Challenges for Millikin Wrestlers

Millikin wrestlers will start their journey toward the NCAA Championships at the NCAA Division III Regional (Region 5) being held at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind. on February 28-March 1.

For the 2024-25 Championships, the NCAA has expanded the field from 180 wrestlers to 210 adding a seventh regional to the qualifying competition. Wrestlers from each of the 10 weight classes will be vying for a top three finish in their regional to advance to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.

To accommodate the additional regional, the NCAA realigned and renamed the regions resulting with Millikin moving from the Lower Midwest Regional to the Region 5. The new region gives Millikin a new opportunity to qualify wrestlers for the national meet. Millikin exits the highly competitive Lower Midwest Regional featuring multi-time national champion Wartburg and the top programs from across wrestling frenzy of Iowa to newly formed Region 5. Region 5 still packs plenty of strong programs like Wabash College, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and CCIW Champion North Central. Fellow conference programs Elmhurst University and Wheaton College will now compete in Region 5 as well. The programs in the region come from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

Several Millikin wrestlers enter the regional with a strong chance at advancing to the national meet. That group is led by returning All-American and four time CCIW Champion Dejon Glaster (26-2) at 174 pounds. Glaster is currently ranked fifth in the country by the NWCA. Glaster is the only wrestler ranked in the NWCA Top 15 in the region.

Senior Coby Haney (24-3) is coming off a CCIW title at 133. Haney is currently ranked 13th by the NWCA. Region 5 is stacked in this weight class featuring number three Dominik Mallinder (UW-Whitewater) and fourth ranked James Day (Wabash).

Junior Chase Mirelez (24-8) looks to build off his CCIW title at 149 pounds. Senior Joey Jens (23-8) at 165 pounds and junior Leno Campbell (17-10) at 285 should battle for top three finishes at their weight classes as well.
