Akins named Co-CCIW Pitcher of the Week

NAPERVILLE — The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) announced its Baseball Student-Athletes of the Week on Monday afternoon. Carthage's Michael Ossenfort was named Hitter of the Week, while Augustana's Blake Nettleton and Millikin's Caleb Akins shared Co-Pitcher of the Week honors following the week's performances.
 
Hitter: Michael Ossenfort, Carthage
Ossenfort, a freshman shortstop from Sioux Falls, S.D., helped lead Carthage offensively by batting .600 (12-for-20) with 11 runs scored, nine RBI and a 1.400 slugging percentage. He hit five home runs across five games, including a four-home run showing in a series against Illinois Wesleyan in which he went 6-for-8 at the plate. 
 
In Carthage's 15-3 win over the Titans on Sunday, Ossenfort finished 3-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored and four RBI. Earlier in the week, he also recorded a home run and a double in a doubleheader split with Lakeland.
 
Co-Pitcher: Blake Nettleton, Augustana
For Augustana, Nettleton turned in the outing that earned him a share of the pitching award in a 9-0 shutout victory over North Central on Saturday. The senior right-hander from Sterling, Ill. struck out 15 over 8.1 innings, allowing five hits and two walks. He threw 124 pitches and held the Cardinals to a .167 batting average in the game while improving to 6-1 on the season.
 
The performance also helped Augustana complete a Saturday doubleheader sweep and move to 20-7 overall.
 
Co-Pitcher: Caleb Akins, Millikin
Akins received the conference's co-pitching honor after delivering a 10-inning shutout for Millikin in a 1-0 win over Carroll on Saturday. The sophomore from Troy, Ohio surrendered four hits, all of them singles, and did not issue a walk while striking out six over 10 innings. He faced 34 batters and kept Carroll off the scoreboard until the Big Blue won on a walk-off in the bottom of the 10th.
